Затем он созвал всех молодых людей в королевстве и сказал: «Сегодня я дам каждому из вас по семени. Я хочу, чтобы вы пошли домой, посадили его, полили и вернулись сюда через год с того, что вы вырастили из этого одного семени ». Мальчик по имени Линг тоже получил семя. Он пришел домой и сказал матери, что вырастет лучшее растение.

В данном предложении используется косвенная речь (reported speech), то есть передаются чьи-то слова без точного их цитирования (в отличие от прямой речи — direct speech).

Если сказуемое главного предложения стоит в прошедшем времени (в нашем предложении это сказуемое told), то в придаточном предложении необходимо изменить время глагола:
