Согласно легенде, она попросила своего мужа снизить налоги для жителей Ковентри, и он сказал, что сделает это, если она поедет на своей лошади по городу голой.

В данном предложении используется косвенная речь (reported speech), то есть передаются чьи-то слова без точного их цитирования (в отличие от прямой речи — direct speech).

Если сказуемое главного предложения стоит в прошедшем времени (в нашем предложении это сказуемое said), то в придаточном предложении необходимо изменить время глагола:
