Механик сказал, что они проверит машину, чтобы выяснить, в чем проблема. Он сказал Дилану вернуться через час. Когда Дилан вернулся, механик сказал: «Проблема в топливном насосе. Вам нужен новый. Он стоит 400 долларов».
В данном предложении используется косвенная речь (reported speech), то есть передаются чьи-то слова без точного их цитирования (в отличие от прямой речи — direct speech).
Если сказуемое главного предложения стоит в прошедшем времени (в нашем предложении это сказуемое
said), то в придаточном предложении необходимо изменить время глагола:
