Однажды я решил спросить его, почему он всегда выбирает этот тип за рулем. «Ну, сестра, — неохотно ответил он, — честно говоря, это в основном для того, чтобы тебе не подпевать». Он добавил, что послушал бы все остальное, если бы я только пообещал не подпевать.

В данном предложении используется косвенная речь (reported speech), то есть передаются чьи-то слова без точного их цитирования (в отличие от прямой речи — direct speech).

Если сказуемое главного предложения стоит в прошедшем времени (в нашем предложении это сказуемое added), то в придаточном предложении необходимо изменить время глагола:
